Ten C.H. Campbell Elementary School fourth-grade students put their math skills to the test while competing at the Eastern Ohio Council of Teacher of Mathematics Annual Competition at Fitch High School April 27. The students were coached and accompanied by their math teachers Dana Zarlenga-Buist and Heidi Snyder.
Members of the team included Claire Audia, Daniel Feuer, Meghan Finnerty, Delaney Pallo, Tony Pannunzio, Ben Martin, Alex Schneider, Lauren Jones, John Gomez and Aaron Ferguson.
The students went through four rigorous rounds of testing, competing against the top mathematicians in the area from Trumbull, Columbiana and Mahoning counties in grades four through six.
C.H. Campbell Elementary students brought home three winners in two categories. In fourth-grade Data Analysis and Probability, first place went to Alex Schneider in Zarlenga-Buist’s class.
In fourth-grade Geometry, second place went to Meghan Finnerty in Snyder’s class and third place went to Delaney Pallo in Zarlenga-Buist’s class.
“This is a tough competition. Our kids were competing against hundreds of kids. They worked very hard and prepared by completing extra prep packets and online practice tests. They were preparing for the competition the same week as the OAAs [tests] so they were really working hard that week. We are very proud of the entire team,” Zarlenga-Buist said.
Schneider was presented with a first-place trophy and Finnerty and Pallo were presented with second- and third-place ribbons, while the rest of the team received certificates of participation.
