Hilltop Elementary School students won the opportunity to ring in spring with a dance party during the school’s annual Fun in the Sun Day March 28.

The school was the leading contributing elementary school to Handel’s Corporation’s Koins for Kids Campaign in Mahoning County, which won the entire student body an ice cream treat and D.J. celebration.

Fun in the Sun Day is a celebration of spring held every year during each grade level’s lunch period the day before Spring Break begins.

The students were encouraged to dress in tropical clothes and accessories, as if they were enjoying a day at the beach, to celebrate the season. Students dressed in brightly-colored shirts and shorts, with Hawaiian leis, Hawaiian shirts, sunglasses, sun hats, visors, ball caps and several girls had flowers pinned in their hair.

During the celebration, tables in the cafeteria were cleared away to make room for the students to spread out beach towels and blankets they had brought from home, which allowed them to eat a picnic-style lunch.

After they were finished with their lunches, the students were treated to a Handel’s ice cream sundae bar at which they could create their own personalized sundae with several toppings to choose from.

Instead of going outside for recess, the students were ushered into the gym where a dance party was waiting for them. Music and entertainment was provided by Rick Komray as part of the reward from the Handel’s Corporation.

Each grade level had 30 minutes to dance to such songs as “The Electric Slide,” “The Macarena,” “Cha Cha Slide,” “The Chicken Dance,” along with requests from the students. The kindergartners also did the limbo.

The Hilltop PTO provided leis for all the students, in keeping with the Fun in the Sun theme.
