Canfield speech team starts season on a roll

Canfield High School Speech and Debate team members held their trophies after placing at the T. Craig Bond Memorial Tournament in Niles Nov. 10. The team won the tournament, competing against 15 teams.

Neighbors | Submitted.Half the Canfield High School Speech and Debate Team competed at the Edison Tournament in Milan, Ohio, Nov. 3. The team placed first out of 19 teams.

The Canfield High School speech and debate team, led by Jeremy Hamilton, is off to a great start to its season, placing first in several weekend tournaments.

The team won the Edison Tournament in Milan, Ohio, Nov. 3, with roughly half the team competing at this event. Canfield dominated the 19 teams with 105 points, with second place going to Laurel School with 76.67 points and third place going to Middletown with 67.01 points.

Placing in the top three in their respective categories for Canfield were:

Oratorical Interpretation: first place, Mia Battaglia; second place, Megan Factor and third place, Mary Elizabeth Monda;

Original Oratory: Katelyn Baltes (second) Hayley Ward (third)

Humor: Dominique Favre (first), Tim Nesnidol (second) and Paige Brucoli (third)

Drama: Lydia Scheel (first), Vivienne Favre (third)

United States Extemp: Mike Sorice (second)

International Extemp: Richie Abel (first)

Impromptu: Daniel Yozwiak (first)

Lincoln-Douglas Debate: Bailey Sandin (first), Andrik Massaro (second) and Sara Lytle (third)

The other half of the team competed at the Columbiana Tournament Nov. 3. The squad competed against 14 teams and placed third with 74.75 points. Howland was first with 82 points, with Austintown-Fitch placing second with 76 points.

Placing in the top three in their respective categories for Canfield were:

Humor: Chris Halley (second)

Prose & Poetry Reading: Amanda Benson (third)

Impromptu: Gary Zamary (third)

Public Forum Debate: Sam Ranttila and Omar Ramahi (third)

The team placed first, competing with 15 teams, in the T. Craig Bond Memorial Tournament in Niles Nov. 10. Following in second place with 74 was Niles McKinley and placing third was Howland with 71.5 Points.

Drama: Emily Damelio (third) Lydia Scheel (fourth)

United States Extemp: Isaac Bowald (second), Arjun Subramanyam (third) and Mike Sorice (fourth)

International Extemp: Cameron Maras (first) and Richie Abel (third)

Prose & Poetry Reading: Brandon Brooks (second)

Impromptu: Gary Zamary (second)

Lincoln-Douglas Debate: Sara Lytle (second)

Public Forum Debate: Julie Gemmel and Rayann Atway (first) and Stephen Gant and Maleck Saleh (second)
