First- second- and third-grade students at Hilltop Elementary School celebrated sportsmanship and a little friendly competition during the school’s annual Field Day May 23.
The students took advantage of the hot, sunny weather by playing games and running races outside on the playground, including water games. The day was organized by Hilltop physical education teacher Linda Magyar. The events were planned for the students to enjoy and use some skills they learned throughout the year in gym class. The teachers assisted Magyar during the races.
First-grade students at Hilltop Elementary School enjoyed their first field day on this picture-perfect day. Activities for the first-graders included a noodle race, basketball dribble, basketball pass, running with a basketball between their legs and running a relay race while balancing a golf ball on a spoon.
The standout events for the students were a water balloon toss and a water koosh ball toss.
For the water balloon toss, students were paired up and had to take a step back each time he or she caught the balloon, until the last pair was standing with their balloon intact.
During the koosh ball toss, each teacher stood by a bucket of water and tossed a wet koosh ball to each student, spraying the student with water. It didn’t take long for the students to cool off by squeezing the koosh balls over their heads.
To end the first-grade’s field day, Magyar lined the children up for a good old-fashioned foot race, with the boys racing the boys and then the girls racing the girls.
